An unexpected twist happened yesterday during the US Open. Andy Murray was defeated by Stanislas Wawrinka 6-4, 6-3, 6-2.  It wasn’t an easy match but there were many mistakes and errors Murray committed that could have been avoided.  Between losing his cool and not focusing on the ball the matched turned into an ugly train wreck.  You wanted to look away but you couldn’t.  Some tennis fans, including myself watched the rise of Murray evolve over the past year.  Yesterday temporarily erased, in my mind, all of his great wins.  The way his emotions and skills declined throughout the game was a shock to observe.  Now I don’t want to get too carried away.  It was only one match; however, one match determines who continues and who is out.  The same applies to anyone that plays tennis regardless of his/her level; thus, I have compiled these 2 universal tips on what you can do to start improving your tennis game today.

Learn to Control Your Emotions

Murray started to lose his cool early on in the match, which put him at a disadvantage from the beginning.  Every time he missed a shot, double faulted, or hit the ball out of bounds his emotions escalated.  It was as if we were watching a novice Murray play rather than the reigning champion of Wimbledon, US Open and the Olympic Gold medalist.  The problem is this too can happen to you.  To resolve this issue, try different calming techniques.  Ask your coach or a tennis specialized massage therapist on effective breathing techniques, stretching exercises and other ways to gain mental focus.  Between your coach and the sports massage therapist, you will find an effective, successful way to stay calm during high pressured situations.

Always Implement the Fundamentals of Tennis

When some tennis players enter intense competitive situations, they suddenly forget the basics.  This seemingly happened to Andy Murray yesterday. He double faulted on a serve during a crucial point in the match.  Steer clear from manufacturing these similar errors.  Think about what you do every single day in practice and apply it accordingly.  For instance, keep your head up when you serve, follow through with each stroke, and always keep your eye on the ball.
